Sunday, February 09, 2020: Lord, Teach Us to Pray

“Lord, teach us to pray…” (Luke 11:1)

This should be the number-one request of every Christ-follower. Without Jesus, we are clueless about how we’re supposed to relate to God. However, when it comes to prayer, the Son of God delights to show us the way. As LifePoint engages in the work of prayer over the next six weeks, will you begin by asking Him to do just that?

Author and pastor Ronnie Floyd begins his book How to Pray: Developing an Intimate Relationship with God by helping us understand the importance of learning to pray:

“We cannot let anything stand in the way of learning how to pray. I believe that when these walls come down, our prayers go up. I believe that prayer can ignite you to pursue an intimate relationship with God. I am convinced that if we will deepen our walk with God, He will broaden our influence in the future. This influence does not come because of your ability, but it comes because of prayer. God can do anything at any time with anyone anywhere. God can do more in a moment than you can do in a lifetime. The more you enter into the secret place of prayer, the more you will see God operate in your life…”

Don’t you want this more than anything else—to know God more deeply, and to see Him work more powerfully in your life? Then you must be firmly convinced that nothing can be accomplished apart from prayer (John 15:5). This is why we believe it to be the first act of love and the first labor of mission for LifePoint. So as you prepare for this Sunday’s worship gatherings, take some time to ask Jesus to teach you. Get quiet, be still, and pray expectantly that He would use these next six weeks to show you the way of true intimacy with God. There is no greater thing you could ask Him for.

PRAYER AND REFLECTION

  • As LifePoint engages in the work of prayer, what do you most hope to learn? What about your prayer life would you like to see change for the better? How would you like to grow in your relationship with God? As the Spirit brings things to mind, offer those things to God and ask Him to reveal His will for you over these next six weeks.
  • Pray that LifePoint’s number-one request in all things would be: “Lord, teach us to pray.” Ask that God would work powerfully this Sunday, that we would desire His presence above all else, and that He would reveal His will to us through His Word.
