Sunday, January 06, 2019: Enjoying God’s Steadfast Love in 2019

“How precious is your steadfast love, O God!” (Psalm 36:7a)

The Bible speaks often of God’s “steadfast love.” Or in Hebrew, His hesed (חֶסֶד).

Hesed is love in its most durable form.

It is covenant-keeping love. When things get dire, hesed does not throw in the towel. It does not ebb and flow based on circumstances. It is God’s unwavering love lavished generously upon His wayward people.

According to Psalm 36:7, God’s hesed is exceedingly precious.

So precious, in fact, that the psalmist says elsewhere that it “is better than life” (Ps. 63:3). Human beings have an innate capacity for cherishing and enjoying what is most precious. Most well-adjusted people find it easy to enjoy those who mean most to us—our spouse, our children, our friends, our parents. Ultimately, God gave us this capacity so that we could enjoy His better-than-life love.

Yet we often settle for a shallow, perfunctory experience of His love.

Sure, in some sense we know that God loves us. And we have no problem acknowledging it. But do you take time to actually enjoy it? To cherish it for all that it is? Or do you merely acknowledge it and move on?

While acknowledgment can be a good start, there’s much more to hesed. God wants to deepen your experience of His love so that He can increase your enjoyment of it. And He has put this greater enjoyment of His hesed within your reach:

  • He’s given you His Word to illuminate His ways and impart His life to you.
  • He’s given you full access to His presence in prayer and worship.
  • He’s given you a church family with whom you can participate in the life of His Kingdom.

Of course, it’s entirely possible to take part in these practices without any real enjoyment of hesed. But it ought not be so. The key is to see these practices as means by which we may cherish God’s love each day and each week. They are ways in which hesed can flow from God’s heart to ours.

  • In what ways do you disbelieve that God’s love is truly better than life itself? Ask God to show you the ways you settle for less than enjoyment of His love. Pray that in 2019 He would show you how you might better position yourself to receive and cherish His love.
  • When gathered to worship with LifePoint, do you find it easy to enjoy God’s love? Pray that God would help you grow in your capacity to enjoy His love in gathered worship this Sunday, and not to merely go through the motions of a worship service.
  • This Sunday, what can you do to encourage others to enjoy God’s love? Ask God to show you how you can model for others what that enjoyment looks like.
