Sunday, May 27, 2018: With Empty Hands And A True Heart

The twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast down their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” (Revelation 4:10-11)

Nothing says “I’ve made it in life” like wearing a crown. It is a status symbol, an almost universally recognized image of authority and nobility. In our world, the few who receive a crown receive a thing of tremendous value.

And yet in Revelation 4, all crowns come off. The value of what the elders are beholding in heaven is infinitely greater than any status symbol this world can provide. And so they cast down their crowns, recognizing that the One they worship is the true King, infinitely worthy the Lord of Hosts.

As you look to Sunday, I ask only one question: Do you have any crowns that need to be cast down at His feet?

How quickly our hearts drift from the glory and majesty of God. As sinful people, we are often drawn to worldly pursuits rather than to the reality of heaven. We overestimate the value of things in this world and fool ourselves into thinking, “If I could just have that thing, I will have made it in life.”

Whatever “that thing” is—that crown—it belongs at the foot of God’s throne. Will you, like the twenty-four elders, cast it there? You can start by pausing to pray something like this:

God Almighty, You are the King of the universe and of my heart. I confess that I have made too much of the things of this world. Forgive me for that and help me to realize that the things of Earth are temporary, but Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. Give me that heavenly perspective about life and let it affect everything about me. I cast down everything I have before You, so that I can worship You alone. Amen.

With that, let’s stand before God’s throne together this Sunday and worship Him with empty hands and a true heart. That’s what our great and glorious God deserves. For He is infinitely greater than any crown.
