Sunday, January 07, 2018: Look to the Lion

Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” (Revelation 5:1–5)

The scroll in Revelation 5 represents the deeds of human history. Whoever is qualified to break its seals is the Lord of history—sovereign over all peoples, places, times, and events.

Initially, when no one was worthy to open the scroll, John began to “weep loudly”. He freaked out because he had forgotten who the Lord of history is—that is, until someone reminded him about Jesus.

“Look to the Lion, John; He’s worthy to open the scroll!”

We too are chronic Jesus-forgetters, aren’t we? In difficult or uncertain circumstances, we often forget to look to the Lion. Thus we end up freaking out just like John did.

How will this situation at work pan out?

Will my family have enough money?

Will my spouse and I ever agree on this big decision?

As we wring our hands over such important questions, we need to be reminded that Jesus is the Lord of history, and therefore of our circumstances. That’s why gathered worship matters so much. It is designed to put us back in touch with the reality that Jesus is big enough to handle our questions and fears. It’s a weekly reminder that He’s at work to bring about His glory and our greatest good—even through the things that freak us out the most.

Will you look to the Lion this Sunday?
